Sadness in People May Be More Intense Than It Appears
Almost 3,000 miles away from home,
a swing squeaks
as a child’s legs propel her body forward.
An ice cream truck chimes
along the outskirts of the park.
The American flag blows
between the rustling fronds of the palm trees.
Empty, are the rest of the swings blowing gently
beneath the sun.
Empty, is your heart beating gently
beneath your rainbow, “Outside with Pride” REI shirt.
Gently, we cry together
as we try
to heal ourselves from this hurt.
