This whole time, these relationships have been fading-
like autumn leaves wading in the wind beneath winter trees.
My optimism had me deceived.
“We need to stop making excuses for our friends”,
is what my wife says. When
our minds can no longer pretend that everything is alright.
There is something wrong when tears won’t stop leaking from my eyes
like melted snowflakes. Sometimes
we need to just let things die,
before we can celebrate new life.
At some point, I need to accept the reality of these losses
as the price it has cost us
to pursue love above their limited views of Christ.
I wrote this poem a couple of months ago following a conversation with my wife. We were reflecting on how we noticed a difference in our relationships with some of our more conservative Christian friends and family members. Ever since we announced that we were getting married we have been pondering the concept of unconditional love, and have been questioning why some of the people who were once so close to us have grown so distant.
